We’re excited to share that the City of Portland has officially approved the Bristlecone Pine Trail Accessibility Improvements Project as of Friday, July 25!

Working with KNOT Studio and Portland Parks and Recreation, Winterbrook is providing land use and environmental planning services for accessibility improvements to the Bristlecone Pine Trail (BCPT), a historically accessible trail in Portland’s Hoyt Arboretum. The project includes improvements to the trailhead and parking area, gathering and picnic areas, and a half mile of the BCPT through protected resource areas. The planned upgrades meet modern ADA standards, significantly enhancing the accessibility and inclusivity of the Hoyt Arboretum. The design also incorporates wildlife habitat enhancements and daylights a culverted stream. Winterbrook successfully used a streamlined land use process to obtain local environmental permits.

The Bristlecone Pine trail is a regional draw with recognition in hiking guidebooks. Increasing access and connection to nature at Hoyt Arboretum will support a broader community providing safe, barrier-free, and welcoming ADA access to trails, including access to unique environmental and conservation activities.

This project is funded by the 2019 Metro Regional Parks & Nature Bond Local Share and will renovate the existing 1-mile out and back trail and the parking lot that serves as a trailhead.
